Within the fall of 2014, Rob Kearney mustered the energy to out himself on Fb. 5 months later, he rode that wave of energy to win the heavy-weight log press document on the 2014 Arnold Strongman Traditional in Columbus, OH, with a 425-pound raise.
That press raise established Kearney as a large within the sport and a fierce advocate for LGBTQ rights.
“Being closeted undoubtedly affected my efficiency,” Kearney says. “I had the burden of getting to faux to be one thing I wasn’t, and utilizing that power was exhausting. After I got here out, I used to be in a position to put extra focus into Strongman and never this facade.”
Since his record-setting log press and outing in 2014, Kearney hasn’t simply continued to compete—he’s dominated. First, he captured the 105-kilogram professional log press document in 2015. In 2017 and 2018, he competed on the World’s Strongest Man Competitors—the head of energy sports activities—in Botswana and the Philippines. Final March, Kearney gained the Arnold Strongman Traditional in Australia—and married his then-boyfriend Joey the following day in Melbourne. Then he set the American heavyweight professional log press document on the Log Raise Championship in Leeds, England, with a 471-pound raise the following month.
No matter how Kearney does in future contests, every time these begin once more, nobody can say that he isn’t robust sufficient to carry his personal.
